Is it time to outlaw the pit bulls as pets?

Yesterday, close to my home, 2 pit bulls mauled a 76 yrs old lady who went out to pick the newspaper for her husband. This dogs breed kills more children a year than cars accidents and some cities already prohibits its breeding and possession at home and, I ask for your opinion: It is not about time to make it illegal to own, breed or sell this type of animal in this country?
