Is my pc screwed or am i doing something wong?

recently my pc read that it couldn't read the hard drive and all my files were missing i put in another hard drive and it wont detect it i also realized if i did a search i could access each file individually from my suspected dead hard drive i connected an external drive and it wouldn't detect that but would work on my laptop
